 Arnprior Curling Club - History

Curling has long enjoyed unusual popularity in Arnprior.

The game was first played on the Madawaska River about 1865, and later on the open rinks in the bay in the river.

The first covered rink with a low ceiling was erected on Victoria Street in 1868.  At the same time, the open air rink on the Madawaska River still had a larger partronage.

The pioneer rink was demolished in 1871 and a rnk of regulation size was built on the same site.  In 1876 a new rink was built on Harriet Street and in 1886 the Club was incorporated.

The Harriet Street building was demolished in 1899 when a two-sheet curling rink was erected on Elgin Street.  This facility was replaced in 1935 by a spacious three-sheet rink with fine clubrooms, kitchen and large ballroom.

The present four-sheet building was built in 1969 and opened on February 14th, 1970.  The total cost was $174,000.

The club hosts various leagues and events, including the Valley League and the Low Cup, which are some of the highest levels of competition held in the Ottawa Valley.  Over its rich history, he club has grown into a fun, social, and recreational club with a touch of competitive spirit.
